An Iron Forge is one of Joseph Wright of Derby’s ‘night-pieces’, in which themes related to invention and industrialisation are depicted at nighttime in order to create dramatic contrasts of light and dark. I love how the glow of the heated iron bar bathes the iron-founder’s family in an almost holy light; it actually reminds me of Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Calling of Saint Matthew. Beautiful!
